Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (USMEX)
The Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, based at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS), was founded in 1980 to study Mexico and the full range of issues affecting economic, social, and political relations between Mexico and the U.S.
Today, USMEX stands as an example of academic excellence and a catalyst for informed dialogues. As a university think tank, our mission is to spearhead rigorous academic research, facilitate enlightening discussions, and foster the integration processes between Mexico and the United States.
Our Mission
We contribute to the ongoing integration process in the North American region by providing a forum for thought leaders to engage in public dialogue; training and supporting a vibrant community of innovative scholars and practitioners; and undertaking cutting-edge research to guide policy decisions.
About the U.S.-Mexican Forum
The election of Joseph Biden as U.S. President and the onset of the COVID-19 crisis created an opportunity for USMEX to lead discussions among experts to formulate proposals aimed at enhancing the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. across five key areas: migration, security and public health, trade and economy, energy and sustainable development, and strategic diplomacy.
The overarching goal of the U.S.-Mexico Forum is to enhance cooperation between the two nations and in the North American region. This involves not only identifying potential frictions arising from their intense and asymmetric relationship, but also formulating proposals to address these issues. Additionally, the Forum aims to spotlight the inherent opportunities within the relationship, both on a national and regional scale.
With the 2024 presidential elections approaching in Mexico and the United States, the upcoming U.S.-Mexico Forum is positioned to play a pivotal role as a policy gathering. This year’s edition invites scholars, policymakers, and experts to delve into the far-reaching consequences of decisions made by presidential candidates on crucial issues in both countries.
