On April 29, the 2024 Jeffrey Davidow Good Neighbor Award will be presented to Laura Diez Barroso Azcarraga and Carlos Laviada Ocejo to honor their extraordinary contributions to U.S.-Mexico mobility in the Tijuana-San Diego region. Thanks to their initiative, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico and Cross Border Xpress, have revitalized the region and, consequently, enhanced connectivity between Mexico and California.
Mrs. Laura Diez Barroso Azcarraga
Mrs. Laura Díez Barroso Azcárraga was born in Mexico City. She is recognized as a leading businesswoman in Mexico and abroad, having started her career in media and magazine publishing. For 12 years she was the Chairwoman and CEO of Editorial Televisa where she oversaw the publication of more than 40 titles in 19 countries throughout Latin America and the US Hispanic market.
In 2006, Mrs. Laura Díez Barroso and a group of investors, acquired a controlling stake in Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (GAP) (NYSE: PAC), which operates fourteen Airports in Mexico and Jamaica. In her leadership role as Chairwoman of GAP, she founded Fundación GAP, to promote the education and well-being of her company’s employees, their families and their communities.
In 2019, Laura was named Chairwoman of Grupo Financiero Santander Mexico where she supports the global bank’s effort for gender equality. Banco Santander was named the highest-ranking global bank in Bloomberg’s Gender Equality 2022 Index.
In addition to being Chairwoman of GAP and Grupo Financiero Santander México, Laura Diez Barroso Azcárraga sits on the boards of Consejo Mexicano de Negocios (CMN), Telmex, UDEM-Centro Roberto Garza Sada. For 15 years she was a board member of Grupo Financiero Inbursa and Royal Caribbean International.
In 2022, Laura was the recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Award for Social Responsibility given by the Woodrow Wilson Mexico Center.
Mr. Carlos Laviada
Mr. Carlos Laviada journeyed into business through Mexico’s nascent auto part and car dealership industries in the early 70s. Later in his career, he became a leading real estate investor in Mexico and the U.S., where he was involved in several leading developments across a wide range of sectors, including hotels, housing, multifamily and office buildings.
In the 2000s, he co-founded LCA Capital, a family office and investment firm that became a lead investor for several companies, resulting in the successful public offers (IPO) of Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (NYSE: PAC), the leading airport group in Latin America and Fibra U-Storage, a Mexican REIT focused on the self-storage industry.
In 2006, Mr. Laviada was one of the visionaries and key investors behind the ideation and construction of the CBX bridge, which is used by more than 4 million passengers annually.
Mr. Laviada was born in Mexico and holds an MBA from the University of Southern California.
CBX
The founding shareholder of Cross Border Xpress (CBX), the most exciting and innovative trans-border project ever built between two countries and a true symbol of binational collaboration and innovation between the USA and Mexico. CBX essentially functions as a secondary international airport for the City of San Diego, and it represents a substantial private investment in public infrastructure and an economic engine for the Tijuana-San Diego region.
